The Ethernet Switch

The first LAN to be introduced was the Ethernet, which was developed by the Xerox Corporation's Palo Alto Research Center in 1972. Basically the Ethernet Switch is a LAN interconnection device that works as the data link layer of the OSI reference model.
The Ethernet bridge and switch are similar, the only difference is that the switch usually supports a large number of connected LAN segments and has a richer management capability.
These switches logically partition the traffic to travel only over the network segments on the path that is located between the destination and source. This feature of Ethernet switches and bridges reduces bandwidth from getting wasted which results from sending the packet to parts of the network which do not need to receive the data.
There are also other benefits like improved security, better management and the ability to operate some links in full duplex.
These switches are full-duplex capable devices. Each port that is located on the switch has two or three lights, which indicate link-activity. Most switches have a mirror part to which a network sniffer can be attached.
Apart from that there are other tools that use ARP spoofing and broadcast storms to fill up the tables in the switch causing it to spread to other ports, similar to a hub.
An Ethernet switch has a number of applications and uses; the first among that it automatically divides the network into multiple segments. Not only that, these switches do not share transmission media and neither do they have to listen to them.
These switches have a large bandwidth that is as high as 200 Mbps, 100 Mbps each way and can operate in a full-duplex mode. These switches do not share the bandwidth with other PC's too.

Installing this switch is a simple process. 
  • First of all take out all the contents of the bag, and connect the Ethernet cable with the Ethernet switch.
  • After you have done that, plug the switch into the Ethernet port in the wall and then plug the other end of the cable into one of the ports of the Ethernet switch.
  • Now connect the other Ethernet cable into any of the ports that are on your switch.
  • Once that is done, insert the opposite end of that Ethernet cable into the port of your personal computer.
  • Now, plug the smaller end of the power cord provided with the switch, into the switch and plug the larger end into an electrical outlet.
  • When you have completed all the steps written above, you will be able to see the status of your network with the Link-Activity and power lights which are located in the front of the switch.

Interpretation of the Signals

  • Power on is indicated by a green light.
  • Link-Activity can be known when the green light that is an indicator of power on flashes. This only happens during network activity.
