How to Register a Domain Name

Rashida Khilawala
Internet has effectively made the world a much more close-knit global market. But, how do you get an address in this virtual world? The answer is by getting a domain name.
Domain names are getting increasingly important with the increasing reach of the Internet. Earlier, the Internet was limited to developed countries, however, now almost every country has a sizable reach. Many organizations want a presence on it to extend their services and thereby grow their business. However, if an organization fails to register a web domain, it can put that organization in a difficult situation. Here is an example:
"Feature Enterprises is a new firm. They are marketing consultants and have several local clients. Now, they have decided to implement their expansion plans. They plan on getting in touch with their global network and working with MNCs and global clients.
Knowing their skill, this should not be a tough task for them. The only glitch in the master plan being, that they don't have a web domain. When they go about it, they make a mistake in selecting an effective domain name. Due to this, they lose out on business."
What was the mistake of Feature Enterprises? They failed to register the right domain name at the right time and hence lost out on it. Many organizations take it for granted, however, it is akin to the name of a virtual real estate. There are certain rules and registration procedures involved in order to have it.

How to go about it?

You need to make sure that the domain name is same as that of your organization or represents it. This way, even someone who is not very sure of your exact name, will be able to reach it easily. You can check all the names that you could use on search engines and generators, and select the one which is most appropriate and favorable.

Where to register?

There are several organizations that provide registration services. The charges, terms, and conditions may differ as per an organization. Either ways, the charges will be reasonable. Make sure that they provide the domain space that would be applicable for your business.
What is the procedure?
  • Select the domain name.
  • Select the registrar that you wish to register your name with.
  • Read the web hosting terms and conditions carefully.
  • Make the payment and make sure that you have control of the domain name.
Once that is done, you can upload your web content as per your choice.

What are the types of extensions?

There are many domain name extensions available. You could go for .com, .org, .edu, .uk, .in, .name, .net, .info, .pro, .biz, etc., as per your need. Your registrar will furnish the rules for each of them. However, they all have a specific importance. For example, .com, .org, and .net are most appropriate for businesses.
Others like, .edu, .info, and .biz, are appropriate for informative or education-based websites. Titles ending with .name are generally private websites and the ones that end with two alphabets, e.g., .uk, .in, .it are country-specific and have a separate set of rules and procedures.
Apart from registration, many registrars also offer to design and upload the website with an additional charge. You could opt for that option as well.
