Skype is a VoIP technology which enables you to connect to your near and dear ones across great distances. Find out more about Skype and how it works, by going through this story.
With the recent developments in the field of Internet technology which have boosted data transmission speeds over cables and optical fibers, and improved the stability of connections, the transmission of analog and digital data can be done easily without any unwanted interruptions. Skype is a communication technology which takes advantage of this, allowing its users to communicate across the world over their existing Internet connection.
Skype is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service provider that enables its users located miles away from each other to communicate in a manner similar to using the traditional telephone service. Thanks to its numerous advantages, today, it has become one of the most popular and easiest ways for making international phone calls.
For using Skype, all you need to do is register for a Skype account. Then, using its software platform, and a microphone, speaker, and display (video calls) on your hardware equipment (mostly computer/laptop), you can make the cheapest international audio/video calls from anywhere.

Skype: How Does it Work

Skype works by using an Internet connection and the Skype software program to send information like calls, messages, etc., to another computer or phone. The user on the other end interprets the information on Skype interface installed at his/her end.
The first thing you'll need in order to use this service is a Skype ID. Once you sign up, a unique number and a customizable username would be issued to you. This component provides an efficient method for securing an accurate connection with other Skype users.
Before making a call, you will need to first find out whether the person whom you wish to call is a Skype user or not. If you are both Skype users, then you can make calls to each other for free. Otherwise the calls are chargeable, and the person calling will need to ensure he has enough credit in his account. It is worth mentioning that the calling charges while using this service are a lot lower than those of normal calls from your landline.
Next, you need to ready your hardware equipment and enter the call information and the number, along with the country code in the specified format. Finally, press 'Enter' or click on 'call me' to start dialing. Skype is one of the most versatile Internet protocol, as it connects to landline telephones as well as other members using laptops, computers, etc., through VoIP.

Advantages of Using Skype

Skype allows you to receive calls even when you are not online. It basically offers a call forwarding feature, that allows you to route the calls to your cell phone and landline, if you are not connected to the Internet.
You can call users who have traditional landline telephones through the SkypeOut service by purchasing calling credits. Moreover, using the right configuration, you can call people who are not online, and vice versa. Besides making free phone calls to other Skype users, you can also make free video calls to them, irrespective of where they are.
Another advantage is that the Skype software works with all computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Mobile and Windows 7, and even on your iPhone or iPod touch, thus allowing you to send and receive Skype calls using any of these devices.
To sum up, we can say that Skype, with its peer to peer phone connectivity, enables you to make the most convenient international calls, video conference calling, etc., with none or very little connection charges, as you will be simply using the existing Internet connection and hardware to communicate with other people.
